Committee Profiles
John Hart - Chairman
Aged 52 years young, Distribution Manager. Married to Clare for 30 years this year and proud father of David (Web site team and the drummer extraordinaire in the new tin shed) Born in Darlington, but moved away at a very early age (Dad was a policeman).
How long have I followed Darlo? There lies a tale. My father told me many years ago Feethams had a pram park, this is where I would be on match days. Highlight of my day, a drink (nothing's changed there), a farleys rusk and a clean nappy. My return to the fold would be 11-12 years ago when I became a part time supporter. For the last 7 years I have become more of a die hard being a season ticket holder for the past five years.
Holidays permitting I miss very few home and normally get to 10 away games a season Best memories? I love cup competitions so I would have to say our 2-2 draw at Leeds in the League Cup and our 3-2 victory over Burnley in the F.A. Cup at the Riverside Stadium. One from the League - a late Steve (Stan the Man) Gaughan cracker in a 1-0 win over the Pooly.
Karen Glencross - Vice Chairman
I have been a follower of Darlington F.C for more years than I care to remember and have been involved with the Supporters Club almost from the beginning, becoming a Committee Member at the end of the first year. I took over the Secretary's job from Irene Chamberlain way back at the end of the 80's and held that position until the mid 90's when I took a break to complete my degree.
I accepted the role of Vice Chairman after Gordon Soulsby passed away, a position I have held ever since. I am still actively involved in the running of the coaches and the day to day running of the Supporters Club. I have seen many highs and lows, but if I was asked to name my favourite game, apart from Welling away in the Conference campaign, it has to be Barnet away during that same season, when winning was everything so that we gained the initiative over our rivals. Classic stuff, which will never be repeated.
The Supporters Club has an important role to play within our football club and we have had many successful years. My main aim is to ensure that this success is maintained through growing membership and continued support of the football club and working together to ensure the future is bright for both organisations.
Colin Tinkler - Treasurer
I went to my first game in about 1956, with my parents, and have supported DFC through thick and mostly very thin ever since. Highlights from my memory bank, include the League Cup run from 1960, when we beat Crystal Palace, West Ham, and then lost to Bolton, and around this same time we played 5 games against Hull City in the FA Cup, finally losing 3-0 at Ayresome Park. I also remember the League Cup run of 1967 when we beat Portsmouth and Millwall, before losing 5-4 in the quarter finals to Cloughie's Derby County. Believe it or not, we have had good Cup runs!
The highs of the past few years include the Conference season, and beating Hartlepool in the play offs. I really wish that Darlo can achieve promotion from League 2, and establish themselves in a higher division. Like many Darlo fans I'm tired of seeing the same old teams year after year, as well as visiting many of the same grounds year after year. We've got fantastic facilities here at the Arena, but we really need to get a successful team to complement it now.
Mary Bowes - Away Travel
I am originally from Middlesbrough, but have now lived in Darlington for 38 years. I am married to fellow Committee member Glen and have two sons, Neal and John. I have followed the Quakers since my son left home, as I found I had a lot more time on my hands!
I got involved in the Supporters Club through Gordon Soulsby through attending away games. My responsibilities within the Supporters Club involve looking after the away coaches along with my husband Glen.
Glen Bowes - Away Travel
Hi I am Glen, and I was born and bred in Darlington, and I have been married to Mary for 38 years. I have supported the men in black and white for over fifty years, through thick and thin (mostly thin as you will appreciate!).
I have currently not missed a home or away game for six years alongside my wife, something I am very proud of. As mentioned above I now look after telephone bookings and running the away coaches alongside my wife Mary.
Margaret Tinkler - Membership
I attended my first Darlo game in 1972, and have followed them on and off ever since, being a Season ticket holder since 2000. There aren't many happy memories from the 70's because we seemed to be at the bottom of the league every year, although I remember us beating Luton in an exciting League Cup match at Feethams.
My favourite game was when we beat Rochdale in the early 1990's to win promotion. I like to get involved in the fundraising side of things with DFCSC, and hope to continue to raise funds, which ultimately are used to help DFC.
Andy Smith - Programme Notes
Although I now live in Consett, I was born and brought up in Darlington, and have supported the Quakers for about 23 years. I became a member of the Supporters Club when it was first formed, nearly 20 years ago. Whilst supporting Darlington I have made some very good friends and have loads of happy memories, which include the promotion seasons.
Going to Wembley twice with Darlington were very proud days which I will never forget, although the results themselves still hurt and probably always will. I left Feethams with some good memories, however you have to move on, and we now have a superb stadium which I always enjoy attending.
As a committee member of the Darlington Supporters Club, my roles include fundraising and the Supporters Club notes in the matchday programme. I believe that the Supporters Club has a very important role to play by assisting the Football Club in many ways, whilst providing a service to the supporters.
Steve Robinson - Football Team
I have been a Supporters Club Committee member since its early years in the late 1980's, playing in and managing the Supporters Club Football Team since it started in 1988. I started attending matches regularly from 1975 onwards, so I didn't see much success until the promotion in 1984 and knocking Middlesbrough out of the FA Cup the same season. Prior to that, the highlights had been avoiding re-election and cup wins over Luton, Sheffield Wednesday, Fulham and a trip to Everton in 1978.
My earliest memories of Feethams were attending inter schools cup finals in the late 1060's for Darlington Junior and Senior schools. The first professional match I saw was in 1966 or 78 when Darlo beat Newport County 1-0. The next match I remember my dad taking me to was the end of season promotion decider in 1968 against Bradford City when we lost 1-3 after scoring first.
Peter Jasper - Website
Hello, I have supported Darlo for over twenty years now and have lots of fond memories from following the team around. I currently run the Supporters Club Website with assistance from my mate Dave. I also am actively involved with the supporters club football team and also write the supporters club column, for the matchday programme.
My greatest memories include the two visits to Wembley and the cup ties at Villa and Leeds. I always enjoy supporting Darlington as there is never a dull moment and it helps provide a superb social life around the country.
David Hart - Website
Greetings all, I am originally from Durham but now live in Newcastle and am currently studying there. I have supported DFC as long as I can remember, which unfortunately means my life to date has been characterised by late trains and unreliable buses!
My involvement in the Supporters Club is to be part of the Web team alongside Peter and Michael, I have myself been a member of the Supporters Club for over a decade, and have for the last few years been a part of the Supporters Club Football Team, playing fellow Supporters Club sides form around the country.
My best memories of the Darlo stem from the 95/96 season, as the tension during many games was unbearable, in particular that memorable thrashing of Bury, and the many vital away wins throughout the year. However the pain of losing the 96 Playoff final to Plymouth still gets me down even now.
Tom Finney - Buster (Fund Raiser)
Well I'm 37 years old, a butcher for most of them and a Darlo fan even longer. Moved away a couple of years ago, so every game is an away game for me.
I've been involved with the supporters club for a few seasons now and can be spotted selling the Buster on most home games. I have been watching Darlo for over 20 years and a season ticket holder for the past 5-6 years. Always been a vocal supporter on radio and tv shows, although that is also difficult because of the distance.
Best memory as a fan has to be the night we knocked the Boro out of the cup. Of course beating Poolie in the play-offs coming a close second. I'm looking forward to the day we play in the premiership.
Tony Waters - (Fund Raiser)
Born in Darlington in 1960, for a number of years I followed The Quakers from afar due to my Father's military career which took us to all parts of the country and the world. Following in Dad's footsteps, I also joined the army and spent 23 years away from the town, permanently returning with my wife Lesley, and our 2 kids in May 2003. During my time away I was a regular follower of DFC travelling either alone or with fellow DAFTS to watch games mainly away from home but with frequent trips to Feethams.
My main objectives as a committee member of Darlington Football Club Supporter's Club are twofold: To raise funds for the football club's Youth Development programme. To listen to supporter's views with a view to improving their enjoyment of matchday experiences. From a personal point of view I love success stories coming from our own Youth players. I find nothing more enjoyable than knowing I have helped to raise funds to develop young players who make the grade as footballers. It has been a disappointing few years on this front recently and I would prefer to see the wage budget used to offer 1st year pro contracts to our own youngsters than to pay the inflated wages of senior players who make few appearances and contribute little to our results.
Barbara Stobart - (Fund Raiser)
Hello I'm Barbara, I have been supporting Darlington for over 40 years. I first started coming to watch Darlington in the early sixties and got my first season ticket about 1963, sitting in the West Stand at Feethams!
Looking back, 1966 was a year to remember: Darlington were promoted, England won the World Cup and I got married (best in that order!!) In more recent times Darlington's victory over Hartlepool, in the play-offs was another good moment. I think a turning point for us in the last few years was when David Hodgson returned!
My main role is assisting Glen at the Supporters' Club Table on match days and fund raising, look forward to seeing you there soon!
