Darlington v Bury - Jan 12th 2008

Result: 3-0 - Att: 3,003

Good afternoon, and welcome back to the Arena for our first home game of 2008 against Bury. With the festive period now becoming nothing more than a distant memory, it is time to push on and make sure that the remainder of the season goes well and we reap our rewards. Obviously I'm taking about a promotion push, and I'm confident that we can ensure success this season.

We experienced mixed fortunes during the festive period. Things started very well thanks to a convincing 4-0 win down at Lincoln City on the Saturday before Christmas. It was then the Boxing Day game at home to Rotherham United, which we drew one goal each. This was probably a fair result, although I'm sure that many of us felt that we could have snatched a winner in the 2nd half.

I must say that it was good to see a bumper crowd attending the game, and I hope that many will return for future games. During the weeks leading up to Christmas, the Supporters Club's 'Bring a friend on Boxing Day' campaign was highlighted in the local media. The simple aim was to attract a bumper crowd to the Rotherham Utd game, by encouraging fans to bring their friends and family along. I would like to think that our campaign did have a positive effect on the attendance, and I would like to thank all those who did bring new supporters along and those who helped highlight it.

Only 3 days later and we were again in action, this time hosting the League 2 leaders MK Dons. Unfortunately, we once again lost to them by a single goal late in the game. This was rough justice, as I'm sure that most fans would agree that we deserved something from the game. It was disappointing to only earn 1 point from the 2 festive home games, as we really did deserve more. New Years Day took the lads down to Rochdale, which turned out to be another disappointing visit to Spotland. Not only were we beaten, but also had Alan White sent off.

Due to Barnet's FA Cup exploits, we had a free weekend last week. So let's hope that the lads are refreshed from their short break, and ready to resume normal service. A win today is very important to our club, in order to push on back towards a place in the top 3. However, due to re-arranged games we do have a lot of fixtures in the coming weeks. During this time, I'm sure that Dave Penney and the lads would appreciate your support at home and away. If you would like to travel to away games, why not get in touch with us?

Away from the pitch, Chief Executive Jon Sotnick has left his position with Darlington FC, and will be working on other projects for George Houghton. However, I'm sure that Jon will continue to attend games regularly and I wish him 'all the best' for the future.

Today's opponents Bury must be congratulated on their progress in this seasons FC Cup competition. Last weekend, they earned a very good draw at Norwich and therefore forced a replay at home. So this afternoon will be a difficult game for us, although I'm sure that the lads can make a return to winning ways. Please continue to give your full support

See you next time.

Andy Smith
