Darlington v Chesterfield

Oct 27th 2007

Result: 1-1 - Att: 4,205

As we head towards the end of October, we find ourselves presently third in League 2. This afternoon's game against Chesterfield will be a difficult encounter, however another home win must be our aim.

Although we went out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy recently, I think that Darlington FC gave a good account of themselves to the nation in front of Sky TV. The lads played well, and were perhaps a little unlucky to lose to a team who can go onto win the trophy and League 1 with it. The attendance was a good one which produced a good atmosphere, which hopefully came across to those watching from around the country. Fair enough we went out, but let's hope that we gave a good impression and Sky TV want to come back again soon!!

Our last home game a fortnight ago produced a great win against Stockport County, by 4 goals to nil. I'm sure that all our fans went home happy after that game!! Not only was it good to see Tommy Wright bag a brace, but also very pleasing to see Julian Joachim and Gregg Blundell getting on the score sheet. Then last weekend, the lads hit the road again and made the short journey down to Bradford City. It seems strange to think that Bradford is the nearest we have to a derby game this season. As we all know, this resulted in a goalless draw. I have to admit that I always felt very uneasy about this game, due to the number of Bradford players who have played for Darlo in the past. I'm sure that they would have all found that extra determination to 'put one over' their old club. So perhaps a draw was a decent result.

The man of the match, as voted by the Supporters Club members returning from the game was Andy Oakes. So well done Andy.

Over recent years there has been a lot of talk about using various types of technology in football to assist with decision making. A lot of us would have recently enjoyed watching the rugby World Cup, and perhaps found out more about the game. I have to admit that I enjoyed the games, and was gutted when we were beaten by South Africa last weekend. However, I do not believe that football should go down the same line in relation to the technology used. The idea of stopping play to view a video every time something controversial happens, would in my opinion only reduce the excitement of watching football. If this was the case, then last weekends Merseyside derby would have probably ended in the middle of the evening. Goal line technology perhaps in the future, but let the decisions be made there and then by the referee's and keep the game flowing.

So back to this afternoon's game, with both teams very close together in the league table, lets hope for a Darlo win. Please get behind the lads, and give them your full support.

Andy Smith
