Darlington v MK Dons - Dec 29th 2007

Result: 0-1 - Att: 5,304

MK Dons are the visitors to the Darlington Balfour Webnet Arena, for this afternoon's eagerly awaited fixture, and the last game for us in 2007. As we know, we were beaten 1-0 earlier in the season at their place, so this afternoon gives our lads the chance to 'level things up'.

MK Dons are a club not too dissimilar to us, in that they play in a large new stadium and are seeking to move up through the football League structure. Having managed Macclesfield Town through some difficult times, and away from bottom of League 2 last season, Paul Ince is doing a very good job at his new club.

As we come to the end of 2007, we can look back on the year and reflect. Last season ended in disappointment for Darlington fans, with any thoughts of promotion long gone by the time we were well beaten by Stockport County on the final day of the season. After that game, George Houghton and Dave Penney soon got to work on preparations for the next season. Numerous players left the club through the summer months, and a number of good quality signings were made.

Pre-season games against Sunderland, Leeds Utd and Middlesbrough showed that this season would be a major improvement. The season started well with wins in the league against Wrexham and Accrington Stanley. Our league form has produced a string of very good results since then, which included a win at fellow promotion contenders Rotherham Utd. Recently in the league, we won 4-0 down at Grimsby Town, thanks to a superb performance.

Unfortunately, we exited all of the cup competitions at an early stage, but did manage a crowd of over 7,000 for the Johnstone's Paint Trophy game against Leeds Utd in front of Sky TV. I'm sure that we all could give more examples of how our season is going. However, we have to keep playing well and getting the right results for our season to mean anything. With Dave Penney at the helm, I have every confidence that this season can be a success.

Away from the footballing side of things, Darlington FC has brought in Barry Simmonds as Managing Director, and Graham McDonnell as Commercial Director. We have also seen the appointment of John Burns as Club Chaplain. So things have certainly been busy since the end of last season, and our club is clearly heading in the right direction.

The Supporters Club have as always continued to provide luxury travel to all away games this season, which is proving to be very popular. After our recent away game at Morecambe was abandoned, we made sure that all of our travelling members were refunded with their fare or transferred to another away trip.

If you would like to travel to away games with us, why not get in touch?
