This afternoon provides everybody with a break from league action, as we play host to Northampton Town on what we hope to be the first step of a long FA Cup run. The magic of the FA Cup seems to have eluded Darlington over recent years. However each year we all hope that this will be our chance of a good cup run, a big premiership side in the 3rd of 4th round and who knows, perhaps a 'giant killing' along the way.
As much as we want to bring some FA Cup magic to Darlington, I'm sure everybody connected to Northampton Town will also want the same. This afternoon's opponents are presently in League 1 above us, and will no doubt provide a stiff test for us.
Having supported Darlo for about 25 years, my FA Cup memories have generally been disappointing. Who can recall getting beaten 3-0 at non-league Telford Utd in the 80's when Everton awaited the winners? Since then, there have been defeats to Rochdale and Peterborough Utd who went onto play Liverpool and Newcastle Utd.
So perhaps this might be our turn for a slice of luck? Let's hope so, meaning that we have to win this afternoon.
Back to League 2 matters now. We all know what happened last Saturday, down at Hereford. Jimmy Greaves used to describe football as a 'funny old game' which the Hereford game typified. I never thought I would see our present team conceding 5 goals in a game, although I'm sure that it won't happen again this season. Strange results like this happen from time to time, and you just have to put it behind you and move on.
Tuesday night provided the lads with the opportunity to put things right, with Shrewsbury Town being the visitors to the Arena. Thankfully, we produced a solid performance and fully deserved our 2-0 win. It was good that we not only put in a decent performance, but after Hereford we kept a clean sheet. It has to be said that both of our goals were of the highest order, and showed what our team are capable of. So well done to the lads for bouncing back.

As many of you may be aware, Darlington fan Bobby Bowman recently passed away due to illness. Many know of Bobby as an avid Darlo fan, who enjoyed travelling to away games and visiting new grounds. On behalf of the Supporters Club I would like to pass on our condolences to Bobby's family and friends at this sad time.
Please give the lads your full support this afternoon, and play your part in making sure we are in the draw for the 2nd round of the FA Cup.
Enjoy the game
