Darlington v Notts County

Aug 25th 2007

Result: 2-2 - Att: 3,763

With the new season now well under way, we return to home soil again for this afternoon's game against Notts County.

The season started well for us a fortnight ago when we beat Wrexham by two goals to nil. I believe that most people would agree that this was an entertaining encounter, which provided plenty of optimism for the season ahead. Both of our goals were well taken, whilst at the other end our new look defence proved to be solid. There was a good atmosphere in the bars after the game, with fans in a positive mood about the new look Darlington squad.

Wasn't it great to be back again, with the new season kicking off? No more decorating or gardening on a Saturday afternoon thank goodness!! Nothing quite like going to the football again, and watching Match of the Day on Saturday night.

We then took to the road, and made the fairly short journey down to Barnsley for our Carling Cup game. There was a good turn out of Darlo fans who certainly out shouted the home support. It was unfortunate that we lost the game, as there was little between us and the Championship side. But the lads gave a good account of themselves, which was appreciated by the travelling fans.

A few days later and we hit the road once again, with Accrington Stanley being the destination. Any win by 3 goals to nil is a good one, but away from home is even better. So another good league win, whilst it is very encouraging to see Tommy Wright and Pawel Abbott forming an effective partnership up front and scoring the goals.

Supporters Club membership renewals are going very well already this season, whilst many new fans are also joining. We transported 2 coaches of supporters to Barnsley, which included a number of brand new members who certainly appeared to enjoy the experience. As the season progresses, it is anticipated that several coaches will be required for some away games. So, why not join us at the Supporters Club, and travel on luxury coaches to away games with other fans?

Membership for the season is priced at £5 per adult and £1.50 per child.

Karen Glencross has asked that I send her apologies to everybody who travelled to Accrington Stanley last week, in relation to the coaches being booked for a slightly later departure than had been advertised. We hope this did not inconvenience anybody.

It is probably no great secret in football that 'team spirit' is an important ingredient for any successful side. So it is very encouraging to see that our squad appear to spend a lot of time together off the pitch, with golf proving popular I believe. Perhaps the matchday programme should include a list of each player's handicap? From Steve Fosters last programme notes, it looks like there is plenty of camaraderie in the squad, which is great news.

Today we play Notts County who are always tough opponents, which usually produces an entertaining game. Enjoy the game, and see you next time.

Andy Smith
