Six things you may not have known about….

. .

Hereford Utd

It has been 10 years since Darlo have visited Edgar Street, but Hereford United are back and have started well on their return to football league. And here are a few tings you may not have known about them….

  • Hereford United have FA Cup pedigree beyond the famous Ronnie Radford goal - in 1957 they were non-league but still managed to thump Queen Park Rangers 6-1 in the Second Round. In the process they equalled the record for the biggest victory by a non-league side against League opposition.
  • But the one we all remember was Herefords' remarkable win over Newcastle in the 1971-72 FA Cup third round. What many people don't know is that:

    * Hereford actually beat the Toon in a replay after heroically drawing 202 at St James Park;

    * Both matches were postponed several times due to bad weather;

    * Ronnie Radfords' wonder goal wasn't actually the winner, although Radford did set up Ricky George for the decisive goal in injury time.

    * They even managed to hold West Ham to a 0-0 draw in the Fourth Round only four days later;

    * At the end of the season, and largely swayed by their Cup exploits, Hereford received more votes than Barrow and as such were promoted to the football league.

  • Hereford player Terry Paine set the record of 824 League appearances when he last played for Hereford in the 1976-77 season. His last 18 appearances were made when he came out of retirement to help the Bulls avoid relegation to the Conference.
  • Seven (yes, seven) Hereford players were booked at the same time in their 1979-80 match with Doncaster Rovers, all because they refused to retreat the full ten yards for a free kick. Hereford also managed to get four players sent off in their 1992-93 match with Northampton, setting a new League record in the process.
  • The 1981-82 season was one many Hereford fans will remember for all of the wrong reasons. Money was so tight that the directors' wives offered to take over the cleaning duties to save money. The squad was also hit by a flu bug which led to all players being banned from entering Edgar Street. This didn't stop the Bulls finishes three places and nine points better off than the Quakers.
  • The Quakers have enjoyed a decent record in league encounters with Hereford - out of 32 matches the Bulls have only come out on top 8 times to Darlo's 11. In those 32 games, Hereford have only scored 26 times.

    Cheers
